Donald Trump’s supporters have come out in droves to declare that ‘we’re all feminists’ following his comments on his very gentlemanly approach to women.
A statement from a female Trump supporter gave us some insight into the declaration: “He’s always been a pro-women and those comments were in reference to how enlightened he has become over the years. As a woman, I’ve always felt respected by Donald whenever he’s caressed my bottom without asking me; I know he’s giving me the highest form of acknowledgement that any man can give a woman by doing so.”
This claim comes after many of his advocates felt that his controversial conversation needn’t be demonised; they understand that feminism is all about women being acknowledged and appreciated for their talents and Trump’s comments about women have always fallen within that. Whatever Trump did with this woman was merely acknowledging her existence and appreciating her natural talent which he must have felt that he simply had to grab before someone else did.
Not wanting to be left behind, the UK now has a Donald Trump supporter in the form of UKIP’s former leader, Nigel Farage. Clearly trying to break the US audience and bring some UKIP flavour to the US, Farage has previously spoken out in favour of the fake-tanned friend. Doing what friends do best, he called out Trump’s conversation as simple boasting the way an enlightened man would about respecting a woman. Nigel Farage, too, has remarked on the value of women’s reproductive functions in the workplace; who can be better placed to support Trump than a man whose former party has been all about women’s rights and progression?
This latest announcement from Trump’s supporters has social media divided on what it means to be a feminist. What we have gathered, however, is that Donald Trump clearly values women and their rights; after all, the American Dream where ‘all men are created equal’ is exactly what Trump and his policies stand for.
